Successfully battling child malnutrition in Pakistan

Read morePakistan is considered a high-risk country that is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. The country is repeatedly hit by earthquakes, cyclones, floods and droughts, destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of families. In addition to the disaster-related challenges, Pakistan continues to be a refuge for one of the world's largest groups of displaced people. Instability in Afghanistan has led to a significant influx of Afghans into Pakistan over the past decades, especially since the regime change in August 2021.
It is estimated that over three million Afghans currently live in Pakistan. Given the large number of refugees, the difficult economic and political situation, inflation and increasingly devastating extreme weather events, such as the dramatic floods in 2022 and further severe flooding in 2024, the Pakistani population is facing many challenges and is in urgent need of support.
Pakistan is one of the countries hit particularly hard by climate change. In 2022, Pakistan experienced the worst monsoon rains in decades. As a result, large parts of the country were flooded. More than 33 million people were affected. This year, Pakistan is once again experiencing heavy monsoon rains and large-scale flooding. Tens of thousands of people have already had to leave their homes and thousands of schools, and other important facilities have been damaged. Many people have lost their agricultural land and livestock. Hunger is imminent. There is also hardly any access to clean drinking water. Infectious diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera and malaria can spread.
Together with our partner organizations SRSO, DevCon and FRDP, we are on the ground providing urgently needed aid.
In Pakistan, we have been working since the Kashmir earthquake in 2005 to help the population affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises to cope. Our aid focuses on health, disaster risk reduction, food security and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Since 2014, we have been focusing on various districts of Sindh province as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
