Malteser International, the worldwide relief service of the Order of Malta joins the world in prayer for the repose of the soul of His Holiness, Pope Francis, who passed away on 21/04/2025 at the age of 88. He was an immense source of inspiration for millions of people around the world. His papacy was characterized by the values of charity, solidarity and human dignity, and he left a lasting impression in the church and beyond, especially thanks to his special love for the poor, the sick, and the dispossessed.

Pope Francis’ recent trips to Iraq in 2021 and to South Sudan in 2023, where he emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation, were actively supported by Malteser International (MI) staff. During his visit to Iraq, the late Holy Father visited Qaraqosh to view settlements reconstructed by MI following the suppression of the Islamic State terrorist militia. This year, MI colleagues are also part of the first aid support team for the ongoing “Pilgrims of Hope” Jubilee in Rome together with volunteers from the other entities of the Order of Malta, which was convened by Pope Francis in his 2024 bull “Spes non confundit”.

Pope Francis will be especially remembered for his teaching on social and sustainability issues and his emphasis on human dignity. His holistic approach to these topics was enshrined in his landmark teaching document “Laudato ‘si”. He repeatedly called on us to put the poor and vulnerable at the center of our care. His ideas continue to be an inspiration for the work of Malteser International and to shape the constant evolution of our global commitment.

Malteser International President Raphael Vermeir stated: “Pope Francis repeatedly reminded us that we must go to the margins of society to assist those in need. This call resonates with our own mission of serving the poor and sick and giving them a voice. His will be a lasting legacy that continues to motivate us to carry on our work with even greater commitment for years to come.”

Our prayers for the soul of the late Pope are joined by prayers for the welfare of the Universal Church, and for the Cardinal Fathers as they prepare the election of his successor.
