Malteser International is mobilizing its network and supporters to raise funds in support of relief efforts in Guatemala after the recent eruption of the Fuego volcano, which claimed more than 100 lives. More than 200 people are also believed to be missing.

The Fuego volcano, which lies 40km south-west of the capital Guatemala City, eruptued violently on Sunday 3 June, sending lava flows into nearby rural communities. As many as 1.7 million people have been affected by the disaster, and more than 12,000 people have been evacuated. 2,500 in temporary shelters. Our friends from the Guatemalan Association of the Order of Malta are working hard to provide care for about 500 people in temporary shelters.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and significant damage caused by this disaster," said Ingo Radtke, Malteser International's Secretary General. Malteser International stands in solidarity with Guatemala and is ready to support the our friends in their relief efforts."

Funds raised will go into relief efforts of the Guatemalan Association, and their need for medical supplies and medicine for burn victims. Additionally, mobile clinics are being mobilized and efforts are being taken to provide critical psycho-social support to traumatized survivors.

With such an unexpected disaster, it is expected that families will be without homes and in shelters for at least 9 to 12 months, and Malteser International Americas is committed to helping families who are suffering losses of every kind to rebuild their lives as they move from shelter to home again.

Please help us help the people of Guatemala.
