It is with profound sadness that Malteser International has learned of the death aged 78 of James F. O’Connor, former President of Malteser International Americas.
A recognized figure in the American Association of the Order of Malta, James, or Jim as he was called fondly, was dedicated and committed to the mission of bringing help to people in need. He was elected the first President of the Malteser International Americas in 2009 and served as a Member of the global Board of Directors of Malteser International following a successful career in business and accounting.
The value of his outstanding leadership in coordinating medical help, food and shelter in the aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake of 2010 was acknowledged by his appointment as Grand Officer of the Order - Pro Merito Melitensi in 2011. His tireless work behind the scenes on behalf of the American Association and in helping to establish Malteser International Americas was greeted with an award of the rare and prestigious Grand Cross of the Order of Malta in 2014. In December 2016, Jim was awarded the Grand Cross – Pro Merito Melitensi for his work as President of Malteser International Americas.
“James O’Connor was a valued colleague and friend who helped to build Malteser International Americas from the ground up,” said President Thierry de Beaumont-Beynac. “On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire staff, we express our gratitude and appreciation for his many instrumental and decisive contributions to Malteser International.”
“Jim was a unique personality who will be greatly missed,” said Secretary General Ingo Radtke. “His tenacity, good will, and sense of humor will never be forgotten, and remain as a blessing for all those who knew and loved him. We extend our deepest condolences to his family. We pray for them, and that Jim’s soul may find its rest in the arms of the God that he served faithfully and with distinction.”
