A reason to smile for Saw October Wah

Nine-year-old Saw October Wah was born in our health facility in Mae La Oon refugee camp in Thailand. He has never known a life beyond the borders of Mae La Oon, where he shares a home with his parents and two siblings. Like any child, he dreams of things that bring joy and a sense of normality, such as owning a bicycle to ride around his neighborhood. Yet, when asked about his most cherished item, Saw’s face lights up and he proudly holds up his toothbrush. They were made available to him as part of Malteser International's school health activities at the school.

“We brush our teeth every day at school. This is incredibly good for us.”, he says about his daily routine, which he does together with his friends before class starts.

The same health facility still has great importance for him and his family: „My mother and father take me to Malteser every time I am sick. If one of our family members is sick, we go there as well. It is good for us.”, he shares, highlighting how Malteser International’s initiatives continue to impact his life.

Supporting health and hope

Mae La Oon camp, located along the border between Thailand and Myanmar, is home to around 10,000 refugees who have fled the conflicts in Myanmar. Life in the camp is marked by uncertainty and scarce resources. As healthcare, education and job opportunities are often only made possible by international aid, many refugees are heavily dependent on this support. The camp's remote location adds to these challenges, restricting infrastructure and resources and making it highly vulnerable to natural disasters like floods and storms. Despite the hardships, the residents of Mae La Oon strive to create a sense of community and maintain hope for a better future.

Malteser International has played a crucial role in supporting these efforts, providing essential medical care, access to drinking water, medication, and equipment. Part of our activities is promoting dental health and hygiene within the camp’s schools, ensuring children like Saw have the tools they need to stay healthy. But our mission goes beyond immediate medical care; it is about building a long-term well-being. In addition to toothbrushes and toothpaste, children like Saw October Wah are also taught important hygiene practices such as hand washing. This teaches them from an early age how to protect themselves against diseases and infections caused by contamination or bacteria. Additionally, Malteser Internationals activities include training community members to become midwives, supporting pregnant women, and promoting healthy eating habits.

More than a toothbrush: empowering health for every child

For Saw October Wah, his toothbrush is more than part of a daily routine with friends - it marks an essential step toward staying safe and healthy.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up strong, happy and resilient. Access to self-care opportunities to prevent illness is a powerful way to make this possible.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s worth reflecting on the true value of the gifts we share. Often, the most priceless gifts are those that bring dignity, hope, and well-being to those who need them most.
